My week in OT
Currently posted to OT this week. Muz admit it.. my interest for ortho has gone up a notch after being in the thick of the action (that is, if you consider holding retractors lah)
Anyway.. great experience.. really like it.. precision carpentry of the human bone, to put it in a nutshell..
Was in fact scheduled to help out on Tuesday, but somehow got saboed by my MO to help out 1 day earlier.. it was 2.15pm on a relaxing Monday when I received a call to go help out.. I went in with mixed feelings as I was in fact planning to meet gf when she knocks off abt 6. As I was scrubbing up, I asked him who is operating. My heart sank when I heard his name. When he added that this pelvic reconstruction + total hip replacement surgery will take approx 6 hrs.. *pause*.. I juz wanted to land a punch in his face. I left theatre 9pm that night.. I shall not say more.
My next day was much better. Surgeon was damn funny.. the mood was very relaxed.. din get to do much, sometimes not even holding retractors (coz there were 4-5 of us in OT).. but it was nice
Today was the best. Finaaly got to be in the same threatre as my mentor.. Wah.. seeing him do a knee replacement is like seeing a master craftsman at work.. completed the entire surgery ( computer assisted + teaching me the steps/details of a knee replacement) in approx 1.5hrs.. quite fast, i muz add. my last case today was hilarious. It is basically this lady who developed knee stiffness after replacement some mths back. plan was to put her under epidural, then manipulate her knee with all our might.. the epidural took abt 1hr and 3 consultants to be in. even then, it din give her enough lower limbs numbness. my MO rolled her eyes when they finally decided to put her under general anaesthesiae. after all the hype, the time has come for me to exert my california gym power. my consultant lifted up her thigh, and then ordered me to bend her knee.. as i cranked it with all my might, i heard her loud crack sound.. I looked up, appearing shell shocked.. consultant said ' dun worry, prob fibrous adhesions you loosened, not the femur lah'.. what a day : )
